Hobie
14 "The giant slayer"
Ever wondered what you can do with
a $1500, 18 year old boat?
Bob Curry convinced us to build a new
set of sails for his 1985 Hobie 14. Bob's quest is to
increase the Hobie 14, Hobie 16 and other older cats
performance and have them compete with the newer generation
of multihulls. He believes owners do not want to invest
in a newer, expensive boat but want the performance
and the look of speed.
That is exactly what we did. Bob added a spinnaker pole
and we designed a square top main and a blaster. All
for less than $1800.00. That is a total investment of
$3,300.00 and a new portsmith rating of 82.0.
Results: First race, 36 mile distant race
= 1st.
2nd through 5th buoy races = 1st,1st,2nd and 4th place
finishes. He even beat one I-17 boat for boat one race.
Here are the results:
Beach
Cat Spin
1st - Bob Curry (H14/Sqtop/Reacher/etc...)
2nd - Brian Lambert/Mark Murray (I20)
3rd - Tom Turlington (I17)
4th - Kirk Newkirk/Will R (I20)
5th - Mark Smith/Bubba (I20)
6th - Mike Kelley (SC22)
7th - Charlie Trinque (I20)
8th - Mike Krantz (I20)
9th - Mark MacNeil (I17)

Dave,
I
finally made it out on the new 14. What a
difference! I popped the
sail going up wind in about 10k winds and
about fell off the stern!
Flying a hull downwind on a 14 is a blast!
Thanks again,
Dan |

SAILS
FOR CHAMPIONS
Black
Cat Screecher Update
These small screechers are more powerful than originally
planned. They were first introduced to the racing scene
during the Summer Splash 2001 held at the King Harbor
Yacht Club in Redondo Beach, Califorina. This year Summer
Splash had 10 Corsair 31s. The first place boat, H.L.
Enloe from Texas, and second place boat, Doug Harkrider
from Georgia, both had Black Cat screechers and spinnakers.
The
second major race for the Black Cat screecher was "The
Round The Island" held in Fort Walton Beach Florida.
Bill Roberts RC-30 with a full inventory of Sabre Sails
included the Black Cat screecher and spinnaker, main
and jib was the first boat to finish this 100mile race.
The Black Cat screecher proved to be the workhorse in
the light air race.
Sailors
using these Black Cat screechers can attest to the speed
they generate. The F-boats sailors have stated that
these sails are the first time a screecher can actually
be sheeted correctly and are very easy to tack. Read

CONGRADULATIONS
TO ALL THE CHAMPIONS
Is
bigger better???
If
you were sailing in the Corsair nationals you saw a
little spinnaker we call "BLACK
CAT™". Everyone that saw "BLACK
CATS™" can attest, it was the fastest
sail on the water. Comments like " how can a little
sail be so fast?" and "everyone needs one in their inventory"
were heard throughout the fleets.
Sabre
Sails introduced "BLACK
CAT™" on Doug Harkrider's F-31R
during the Dogwood Regatta, two weeks before the Nationals.
Doug was able to sail 34 degrees apparent in 12 knots
of true wind with a resulting boat speed of 17 to 19
knots. Doug blew all the competition off the water.
During the Nationals Doug was able to achieve speeds
in excess of 25 knots with an apparent wind angle of
less than 60 degrees. Again Doug's boat speed upwind
and downwind could not be matched. He won the F-31 class
hands down.

Sets Record First Place Finishes
Takes
3rd Annual Hobie Wave Nationals with 8 First Place
Finishes out of 12 Races
Dec
3, 2000
Bob finished the first race in first place, followed by
2 second place finishes and 1 third place finish. Bob
then sailed the last SEVEN races to all first places finishes.
This is the first time anyone has taken more than two
firsts at the Hobie Wave Nationals. Bob finished 28 points
ahead of second place finisher, Dan Kulkoski. There was
68 boats in the fleet that included four former Alter
Cup winners. Bob used an Contender Sailcloth Pentex sail
designed and built by Sabre Sails. An accomplished catamaran
sailor, Bob has less than 3 months experience on the Hobie
Wave.
Even
more remarkable is that this is Bob's second national
championship within 6 weeks. (see below)

Look
what we did now!
THE
BLACK CAT
Sabre
Sails has always been known for fast spinnakers. Recently,
there have been reported sightings of a new small black
sail on an ARC-21 and ARC-22 that is faster than anything
out on the water.
Sailors
have been calling it the BLACK
CAT. It is an asymmetrical spinnaker
that was designed to achieve high pointing angles and
double-trapped hull flying in 8-10 knots of wind. The
BLACK CAT
has achieved all of its engineering goals and is now
in production. The BLACK
CAT also comes in other colors than BLACK.
Sailors
sailing the BLACK CAT
report that the sail to be even faster than advertised.
The power can be felt in the sheeting. Sailors report
that a 2 to 1 sheeting system is a must. The sail's
design creates such a forward velocity vector that the
power is felt in the sheeting. The BLACK
CAT has actually pulled a 230-pound man
across the tramp on an ARC-22 in 8 knots of wind. The
most amazing feature about the sail is the leech design
allows the air to be exhausted and allows the boat to
sail high wind angles without excessive amount of heel.
This equates to speed. Call Bob Curry to get all the
latest info on the BLACK
CAT.
