SAIL
TECHNOLOGY
Stress/Strain
Analysis and Strain Reduction Strip Patches
We have incorporated into our sail designs a new software
program that gives our designers the capability to assure
that the correct cloth, weight, type and panel layouts
are used in the construction of each sail. The major benefits
of this technology, realized by both cruising and racing
sailors, are lighter weight sails and increased longevity.

Additionally,
through the use of this analysis software, we have been
able to reduce the overall size and weight of the head,
clew, and tack patches. By reinforcing only the required
areas and distributing the loads into the sail, we have
eliminated the extra weight from reinforcing layers
of sailcloth as in traditional patches.
Overall
weight savings has been considerable. These sails are
holding their shape better in greater wind ranges because
the cloth is lighter and stronger. You get all the strength
from the cloth without all the weight.
We
have now incorporated this technology on performance
cruising sails. The furling genoas/screechers are furling
tighter, more evenly and are easier to furl. These sails
require a smaller, and in some sails, has eliminated
the need for padded luff.
In
summary, our prototype sails performed beyond even our
expectations and we are now in production using this
technology.
